What is Cerumen?

Ear wax, medically referred to as cerumen, is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal. It protects the ear from dust, bacteria, and other foreign particles. It also naturally cleans and lubricates the ear canal.

Typically, ear wax is self-cleaning. When ear wax catches dirt or dust, it hardens and slowly starts to move out of the ear canal. When you talk or chew, the ear wax slowly pushes toward the top of the ear canal. Eventually, it falls out naturally or is washed away in the shower. However, sometimes you may have too much ear wax, and it can block the ear canal.

Symptoms of Excess Ear Wax

Recognizing the symptoms of excess ear wax can help you address the problem before it leads to more serious issues. Symptoms can include:

Professional Ear Wax Removal Services

Irrigation

Ear irrigation is a common method of ear wax removal. A stream of water is used to flush out the ear wax. This procedure must be performed by a professional to avoid any injury to the ear canal or eardrum.

Manual Removal

Manual removal involves using specialized instruments like curettes or ear picks to remove ear wax. This approach may be used for cases where the ear wax is too hard for suction or irrigation or when the ear canal shape requires a more precise method.

Benefits of Professional Removal

Our professional ear wax removal offers several significant benefits:

  • Safe and effective treatment tailored to your unique ear anatomy
  • Preventing self-inflicted damage to the delicate structures of the ear
  • Immediate relief from symptoms caused by impacted ear wax
  • Professional assessment of any underlying conditions contributing to ear wax buildup

Tips to Prevent Ear Wax Buildup

One of the best ways to prevent ear wax buildup is to use safe ear-cleaning practices. You can gently wipe the outer ear with a cloth to remove dried ear wax. You should always avoid using cotton swabs since this can push ear wax further into the ear canal.
