Signs and Symptoms of Balance Disorders

The most common symptoms of balance disorders include:

  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo (feeling like you or your surroundings are spinning)
  • Unsteadiness when standing up, walking, or turning
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Changes in heart rate and blood pressure
  • Experiencing emotions like fear, anxiety, or panic

Symptoms can occur suddenly and last for a few seconds, or they can be persistent and last for long periods.

Types of Balance Tests

There are several tests we use to find out more about your balance. The most common balance tests include:

Videonystagmography (VNG)

VNG is a balance test to determine if your balance disorder is caused by issues in the inner ear. During the test, we’ll observe the movements of the eyes. The ways your eyes move can tell us a lot about your balance system, and this test evaluates how well the inner ear and the brain are functioning.

Electronystagmography (ENG)

Similar to VNG, ENG measures eye movements and the muscles that control them. This test uses electrodes rather than video to detect abnormalities in your eye movements. It can evaluate how well the eyes respond. It also makes note of the movement of your head and the force of gravity.

Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMP)

VEMP testing measures the sound sensitivity of the inner ear and the pathways to the brain. It uses sounds to trigger muscle responses. These responses are recorded and analyzed. This test can detect whether the inner ear and vestibular nerve are functioning properly.
